Untitled

installation / listening space / live sound
2023

This (untitled) work, a ”creature” constructed of a reclaimed boat, was a temporary installation and a live underwater audio listening space made for the 2023 Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä. The work aimed to invite people to interact with the water of Kitinen (part of the Kemijoki river basin) and to emphasize the life below through extended listening. From below the surface, sounds were directed from hydrophones to speakers, and the silent shivering of the slowly flowing stream, the gravel crackling beneath the feet, and the rumble of boats passing were amplified under the upside-down boat.

Influenced by the findings from the process of ’Sounding Silence’ (2022), and inspired by local rowing protest, mythology, history, and infrastructure, the installation also aimed to draw attention to the exploitation and effects of energy production in the river basin.

Roots and driftwood supporting the boat and hanging under its surface were collected from the shores of the Porttipahta Lake - one of the artificial lakes that drowned homes, herding grounds, and forests in 1970, and was created to store energy. Some of the woods have been gotten from Sompio’s Arja, an artist and an entrepreneur who has been collecting driftwood from the area for years and whose childhood home lies today at the bottom of the lake.

The off-grid installation was solar-powered by the midnight sun.

For me, this installation was the first part in a series of appearances planned for the work, that aim to study a cultural relation to water in the Finnish energy-production context. It also continues personal research on how sounds create and evoke collective feelings in relation to land and water. The second act/appearance for the work will take place in Helsinki in summer 2024.
